Obama ad hits Romney on Wall Street, Medicare, education

NASHUA, N.H. - President Barack Obama's re-election campaign released a harsh new ad Saturday that accuses Republican rival Mitt Romney of looking to roll back regulations on Wall Street, turn Medicare into a voucher system, and slash education funding. The 30-second ad cast the incumbent in a defensive light -- someone fighting to hold onto cherished programs, not to propose new reforms.

Romney's campaign hit back, with spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg saying "we can't afford four more years like the last four" and predicting that voters would pick Romney's "positive agenda over President Obama's increasingly desperate attacks."

The Obama commercial, set to run in Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Virginia, distills Obama's main argument for re-election: That the former Massachusetts governor will gut programs that help the middle class in favor of wealthy Americans and big banks.

"Mitt Romney's plan rolls back regulations on the banks that crashed our economy. Medicare, voucherized. Catastrophic cuts to education. Millionaires will get one of the largest tax cuts ever. While middle class families pay more. That's what Mitt Romney wants to bring here. Remember that when you go here."

Polls suggest that Romney has the edge among voters on which candidate would better revive the still-sputtering economy, while Obama leads on who would better defend middle-class interests. The president has spent months trying to paint his rival as an out-of-touch multi-millionaire, while Romney has portrayed his huge success as an investor as evidence he is the better candidate to spur growth.

In a sign of how important this battle is to Obama's political fortunes, the president also used his weekly address from the White House to underline those themes, charging that Republicans hope to "delay, defund, and dismantle" legislation imposing new rules on Wall Street in the aftermath of the 2007-2008 global financial meltdown.

"To make sure America never goes through a crisis like that again, we passed tough new Wall Street reform to end taxpayer-funded bailouts for good," he said.

"That's what Wall Street reform is all about ? looking out for working families and making sure that everyone is playing by the same rules," said Obama.

"Sadly, that hasn't been enough to stop Republicans in Congress from fighting these reforms.? Backed by an army of financial industry lobbyists, they've been waging an all-out battle to delay, defund and dismantle these new rules," he said. "I refuse to let that happen."

"We've come too far ? and sacrificed too much ? to go back to an era of top-down, on-your-own economics," he said, in a line that sounded ripped straight from his stump speech.

Obama has also strived recently to emphasize upbeat economic news (while never forgetting to highlight that he inherited a crisis from George W. Bush).

"Our businesses have added more than 5 million new jobs.? The unemployment rate has fallen to the lowest level since I took office.? Home values are rising again.? And our assembly lines are humming once more," he said in his weekly address.

"The president's campaign is once again trying to cover up for his lack of an agenda to help the middle class," said the Romney campaign's Henneberg. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are offering real change for a real recovery, with 12 million new jobs, rising incomes, and a stronger middle class."

Obama was holding a rally in New Hampshire, whose four electoral college votes are seen as up for grabs, as well as record a radio interview set to run in the Granite State on Tuesday. He was also to do radio interviews set to run in Miami, Fla. and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Web Hosting Basics That You Must Know | J14 Design

Finding the right web host is key to ensuring that your website is always available. You have to do research, compare prices and plans, and check out references before you make your selection. Read on to find a list of tips which will help you find a host that will fit your needs.

Hosting Company

Instead of finding a great web hosting company, start your own hosting company to service your own needs. This can provide many benefits including secondary income and free website hosting if your business takes off. This is a great way to think like an entrepreneur, and make some money instead of paying for hosting.

Be aware that many website hosting providers are actually reservers. They do not actually own their own their web servers, so beware. You may experience delayed times for fixing problems or customer service requests. You can often get the exact same service directly from the company that they are leasing space from, so ask who that company is.

You need to take the time to figure out how much website hosting truly costs and set up a budget for it. This is the only way that you can be sure that you are going to be able to afford to keep your site up and running for the long haul.

Do not wait until the last minute to start looking at website hosting solutions. When creating your online business or personal project, you should establish a plan of action that includes finding a web host. Look at reviews and try a few different services if you have to before making your site official.

Do not be deterred from using a web hosting service that employs customer service agents in a foreign country. Though it may be difficult to understand various accents at times, realize that many countries spend extraordinary amounts of time and energy in making their citizens technologically superior. This is particularly true of India, which is why many companies employ educated technology services overseas.

If you are hosting your site with a Linux based site, be sure the company you choose updates their information regularly, and at all levels. You don?t want your page to crash or be insecure because your host is not properly maintaining their servers and networks, so look for those that do.

If you are not experienced enough to create your website with HTML, you can use FrontPage instead. FrontPage allows you to put together a web page without writing any code. Make sure you choose a hosting service that supports FrontPage and its extensions. Consider re-writing your website as you acquire more skills.

A key quality to look for in your web page hosting provider is how much technical help they offer to their customers. A good company will have technicians to perform any required upgrades to the server, plus continuous preventative maintenance to their equipment. By doing this, most minor problems are caught and repaired before they become problematic. By choosing a website hosting service which provides excellent technical support, you can minimize the amount of time your website is unavailable to your customers.

Always read the terms of service carefully before sending any money. You will find that a lost of hosting services have hidden conditions and charges. If you do not have a clear idea of how much you will be paying every month and what kind of features you will have access to, look for another service.

Web Host

Know the speed and reliability of the internet connection that the web host uses. The web host you choose should have at least a T3 line as their connection to the internet. Some of the premium hosts also provide redundant connections, ensuring that even if one of their internet connections experiences an outage, service is not interrupted but be prepared to pay more for this type of speed and reliability.

The information contained in this article is a great place to start when figuring out how to select a web host to use. You should go from here and start looking at a variety of companies, create a short list and then really quiz them. In the end, your site will be available online at a price you can afford

Romney seeks Ohio votes as Obama preps for debate

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan went back to school on Saturday to rally college students in all corners of all-important Ohio and hammer at President Barack Obama for going easy on China over unfair trade practices. Obama took precious time off the campaign trail to practice for the next debate against his GOP rival.

It was an unspoken acknowledgment of the importance that Obama attaches to upping his game in Debate No.2 that the president is largely dropping out of sight for five straight days in the final weeks of the race to prepare for Tuesday's encounter in Hempstead, N .Y.

Even while cloistered for debate prep at a sprawling resort in Williamsburg, Va., though, the president didn't completely cede the spotlight to Romney. His weekly radio and Internet address highlighted the Obama administration's work to revive the U.S. auto industry ? a message aimed squarely at working-class voters in manufacturing-heavy states like Ohio.

Romney, for his part, told a crowd of more than 3,000 people at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth that Obama was ducking an important decision on whether China is manipulating its currency to gain a trade advantage. A decision was due on Monday, but the Treasury Department said Friday the decision won't come until after global finance officials meet in early November. That means a decision is unlikely before the Nov. 6 election.

"It's time for us to stand up to China for their cheating," Romney declared. "It's got to stop."

Romney framed the issue squarely as a matter of jobs, saying cheap Chinese products were driving American companies out of business.

"We've got to get those jobs back and make trade to be fair," Romney declared.

Ryan, too, criticized the administration for failing to hold China accountable for its trade practices. During a morning appearance in northeastern Ohio at Youngstown State University, he told a crowd of about 1,400 that his hometown of Janesville, Wis., was much like theirs ? a "blue-collar, factory town" where the struggles of the auto industry hit home hard.

Ryan said the president had led the country toward a higher national debt, steeper taxes and insufficient job growth.

"We can't keep going down this path," he said. "We can't keep accepting this is the new normal."

The Wisconsin congressman then hopscotched to Bowling Green State University, in the northwestern part of the state, where he grabbed a bratwurst with mustard at the college Republicans' tailgate party before the school's football team took on his alma mater, Miami (Ohio) University.

The Obama campaign dismissed the Republicans' tough talk on China as nothing more than talk.

"Mitt Romney will never crack down on China's cheating ? just look at his record," Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner said in a statement. He said Romney had opposed Obama administration efforts to impose tariffs on Chinese-made tires and had invested in companies that shipped American jobs to China.

Obama's campaign upped its celebrity quotient as the two sides claw for any advantage in a tight race: Actor Morgan Freeman's commanding voice narrates a new ad telling voters that Obama has met the nation's challenges and "the last thing we should do is turn back now."

On Thursday, Bruce Springsteen will team up with former President Bill Clinton to rally Obama voters in Parma, Ohio, in what will be the singer's first political appearance this campaign. "The Boss" plans a second event Thursday, in Ames, Iowa. Springsteen campaigned for Obama in 2008, too.

Both sides are devoting huge time and effort to Ohio, this year's battleground to end all battlegrounds, where polls show Obama with a slight edge over Romney. Saturday's emphasis by the two sides on the auto industry and manufacturing jobs was designed to connect with blue-collar voters there.

Both sides also are keenly aware of the importance of this year's series of three presidential debates. Romney's strong performance in the first debate on Oct. 3 gave his campaign a much-needed jolt of energy, and the GOP nominee said his campaign still had post-debate momentum over Obama.

"His campaign is about smaller and smaller things, and our campaign is about bigger and bigger crowds, fighting for a bright future," Romney said on warm, sunny fall day.

Joe Biden's aggressive counterpunch in a debate with Ryan on Thursday cheered Democrats, but some critics thought the vice president overdid the theatrics with his frequent eye rolls, headshakes and broad grins suggesting incredulity.

Obama's campaign has acknowledged he didn't practice enough before his widely panned performance in the first debate. Some sessions were cut short, others canceled altogether, mainly because of developments in Libya, where four Americans were killed at a U.S. consulate.

The campaign has resisted calls from some Democrats to shake up Obama's debate team. Senior advisers David Axelrod and David Plouffe, along with former White House officials Anita Dunn and Ron Klain, still are running the preparations.

The president may have picked up a few pointers from Biden's debate with Ryan. Obama watched the vice presidential debate from aboard Air Force One and would chime in when Biden made a strong point.

"That's a good one," Obama said, according to aides.

Tuesday's town hall-style debate at Hofstra University will have an audience of about 80 undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization. Moderator Candy Crowley of CNN will select from among questions on foreign and domestic policy submitted by the audience. The final debate, covering foreign policy, will be Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Romney spent nearly four hours Saturday morning at a Columbus hotel preparing for the next debate, then boarded his campaign bus for Shawnee State. From there, the Romney bus headed for Lebanon in southwest Ohio, where he gave a similar speech.

The Obama campaign isn't leaving Ohio unguarded for long: Michelle Obama will visit Delaware and Cleveland on Monday and the president will be in Athens on Wednesday.

To help keep Democratic ads like Freeman's new appeal for Obama up and running in the hotly contested battleground states, the president dispatched Biden to a pair of private fundraisers in Connecticut and New York on Saturday.

PST: US finds unlikely hero in Johnson

Not even the most ardent Eddie Johnson fan would have predicted the striker, making his first appearance in two years for the national team, would be the man that pulled the U.S. back from its World Cup qualifying ledge, yet that?s exactly what happened Friday night in St. John?s. Taking his comeback to a level nobody could have predicted, Johnson scored both goals in the States? 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda, his 91st header salvaging an otherwise worrisome performance from the United States Men?s National Team.

The U.S. had led for only six minutes ? the time between Johnson?s opener and Dexter Blackstock?s 26th minute response. From then on, it was the same, attack-challenged U.S. we?ve come to know under Jurgen Klinsmann.

There was possession but no urgency; intent but no execution; talent but no production.

Had Johnson not redirected home Alan Gordon?s late cross, the U.S. would be in crisis mode. That Klinsmann?s two surprise recalls created the winner is their boss?s only saving grace. His team was lacked urgency, was curiously deployed, and showed no progress from their last disappointing road trip to Kingston.

Few teams in CONCACAF would have lost to the U.S. tonight. Klinsmann is lucky his team was facing one of them.

Here are some quick takeaways:

1. Where was the urgency? - This wasn?t a true must win, but as the coach said mid-week, the team was treating it as such. But if this team was treating this as a all-or-nothing scenario, the U.S. is going to have difficulty making it through The Hex (the next round of CONCACAF qualifying).

With the exception of some fire from Michael Bradley when he was taken down from behind late (a play that should have given the U.S. a penalty kick), the team approached this one with the same business-like approach we?ve seen throughout the tournament. They could have used a lot more passion tonight.

MORE: Did the conditions matter on Friday?

2. U.S. is still not executing in the final third ?

3. ? and Jurgen Klinsmann bears much of the blame.

It will be interesting to hear Klinsmann?s explanations as to why Johnson spent most of this match wide left. The States generated three good chances for him on crosses, but all too often the Sounders? No. 9 was seen deep in midfield, tracking back like a traditional midfielder, even if he played like a forward most of the time.

Beyond Johnson?s deployment, the U.S. still doesn?t seem to know what to do with all their possession. We?re seeing very few balls played behind the defense, and those that are tend to be poorly weighted into marginally dangerous spots. We?re not seeing effective runs in the box. We?re not seeing the type of movement and interchanging that opens up space. Aside from a few nice layoffs from Clint Dempsey, we?re not seeing the type of one-touch passing that can navigate compact defenses.

Some of that is personnel. Some of that is performance. Some of that is training, and some of it is tactical.

There are a number of places where solutions could lie, but after another performance where the play far outstretched the goals, the team needs answers.

MORE: Friday a good night for Jozy Altidore??

4. The central defense remains a work in progress ? Both Geoff Cameron and Clarence Goodson were beaten for Antigua and Barbuda?s goal. Cameron allowed his man, Peter Byers, to blow by him, while Goodson slipped getting across the six to mark Blackstock. Twice late, players were able to turn on shots inside the U.S. penalty area, leaving Tim Howard lunging to protect his far post. As Antigua and Barbuda were breaking out into counters late in the match, you couldn?t help but wonder what a World Cup-caliber team would have done to this defense.

Perhaps things would have been different if Fabian Johnson were healthy, allowing Carlos Bocanegra to play in the middle. We should find out on Tuesday.

5. Heroic Eddie Johnson ? As the seconds ticked away on a game that looked destined to end in a draw, the U.S. desperately needed a hero. Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, perhaps Carlos Bocanegra? One of the core needed to assert himself.

Instead, it was Johnson. Controversial callup, having seen you in two years, ?you?re not Jozy? Eddie Johnson.

MORE: PST Man of the Match ? Eddie Johnson 2.0

Pealing off his man in the 91st minute into space toward the far post, Johnson subtly volunteered to be that hero. Just as he?d done on the opener, he hammered his header down and across goal, giving goalkeeper Molvin James little chance to preserve a historic result.

One year ago, Johnson was a non-factor for the U.S. After failing to land a place with a club in Mexico, it wasn?t even clear he had a professional future. When he landed in Seattle, he had to start over: New team; new city; no prestige. Everything that got Eddie Johnson to this point has happen in the last seven months.

Now (and all of a sudden), he?s the team?s best goal scoring threat, the man who represents the U.S.?s potential to be a truly dangerous team ?

And the one good thing to come out of the States? trip to Antigua.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Investors turn wary as earnings picture dims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Earnings season is heating up, but investors' feet are getting cold.

Central bank-fueled gains took markets within reach of five-year highs in September, but now U.S. stock market participants are shifting their focus back to corporate outlooks, and the picture is not pretty.

Early earnings reports have underlined those concerns, which may be exacerbated when dozens of major companies - including Dow components General Electric , Microsoft Corp and International Business Machines Corp - report next week.

"Caution is definitely the operative word as Europe and China look to continue dragging on earnings," said Michael Loewengart, director of investment strategy at E-Trade Financial in New York. "The overall tone is so pessimistic that we may see some upside surprises, but we could still suffer considerable losses if the news is bad."

Profits of S&P 500 companies are seen dropping 3 percent this quarter from a year ago, the first decline in three years, hurt by China's slowing growth and Europe's debt crisis, which recently prompted the International Monetary Fund to cut its 2012 economic growth outlook.

Financial stocks will be especially in focus, with Bank of America Corp , Citigroup Inc , Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley all set to report.

Results on Friday from JPMorgan Chase & Co and Wells Fargo & Co generated some caution about the group despite both reporting stronger-than-expected profits. Wells Fargo posted disappointing revenue and a bigger drop in net interest margin than had been anticipated.

Wells Fargo shares slumped 2.6 percent to $34.25 while JPMorgan lost 1.1 percent to $41.62 despite bullish commentary about the housing market.

"We need to see big banks doing well, and JPMorgan or Wells didn't give us the boost we were hoping for," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York. "Citigroup is the one we're looking for. If profits come in worse than expected there, that would make me more bearish about the economy in general."

FEWER COMPANIES BEAT THE STREET

With only 6 percent of S&P 500 companies having reported, 59 percent of companies have topped profit expectations - less than the average beat rate of 67 percent for the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data. Half of companies have beaten on revenue, while a quarter missed profit forecasts.

"We need to see the beat rate pick up well into the 60s if we want the market to have any support," Kaufman said.

The S&P 500 fell 2.2 percent this week, its biggest weekly percentage drop since June, on caution about the season after a number of bellwethers cautioned on their outlooks, including Chevron Corp and Alcoa Inc .

Profits are being dragged down by material and energy stocks. Material sector earnings are seen dropping 24 percent, and energy sector results are expected to slide 19 percent.

In contrast, aggregate profit growth for financials is seen up 1.6 percent.

Trading could be especially volatile in the Nasdaq, with a number of tech titans on tap, including Microsoft, Google Inc , IBM and Intel Corp , which recently cut its outlook.

"Tech results can be a good proxy for business spending, which will give us a sense of how companies are viewing the future," said John Carey, portfolio manager at Pioneer Investment Management in Boston.

Carey, who helps oversee about $200 billion in assets, said outlooks were still too optimistic, "so I've pulled in my horns a bit, and have become more defensive."

BLUE CHIPS, GREECE AND DATA

McDonald's Corp , UnitedHealth Group and Johnson & Johnson are also scheduled to report earnings, along with General Electric, which E-Trade's Loewengart said would be particularly watched, given the company's diversified operations.

Trading will also be influenced by the news flow in Europe, where a summit of finance ministers will take place. The Wall Street Journal reported that a deal on austerity measures for Greece could be reached in time for the meeting.

In the realm of U.S. economic data, investors will look ahead to reads on retail sales, the Consumer Price Index and existing home sales. September retail sales are seen rising 0.8 percent, while the overall CPI for September is expected to gain 0.5 percent, and September existing home sales are forecast to fall 2 percent, according to economists polled by Reuters.

Anil Kumble appointed ICC cricket committee chairman ? Cricket News Update

Former India captain Anil Kumble has been selected to replace Clive Lloyd as the ICC cricket committee?s newly appointed chairman, as per an ICC media release. Yet another new addition to the committee?s make-up is that of former England captain Andrew Strauss, who will be coming in to replace Ian Bishop.

?In Anil Kumble, we have a new chairman who has unquestioned experience not only as a player with India but also as an administrator with Karnataka State Cricket Association,? said ICC president Alan Isaac. ?I am sure that he will carry on Clive's good work and bring, like Andrew Strauss, contemporary thinking to the committee as both understand clearly the issues facing the modern game.?

The ICC?s media release stated that Kumble?s nomination had been ?unanimously? agreed upon at a meeting of the ICC board in Colombo this week.

The appointment as the new chairman sees Kumble succeeding the West Indian Clive Lloyd, who had headed the committee since 2008, to become the second Indian committee head after Sunil Gavaskar. The new post is one among the many Kumble now holds, having been appointed head of the BCCI?s technical committee, alongside serving as the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association ? a post he took up almost immediately after retiring from cricket in 2008.

Strauss, meanwhile, who relinquished his post as England?s Test captain in addition to announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier this year, comes in after Bishop voluntarily stepped down and nominated Strauss in his stead ? a move which was duly accepted by the ICC. Other developments include one-year extensions being granted to two current members of the panel ? ICC statistician David Kendix, and Mark Taylor, former Australia skipper.

In addition to balancing a host of responsibilities, the committee is in charge of suggesting changes in the rules which apply to the different formats of cricket, in order to increase the appeal of the sport, and keep its laws streamlined.

The latest changes to be recommended by the committee included the scrapping of the bowling Powerplay, increasing the bouncers permitted in an ODI over to two, and cutting down the number of fielders permitted outside the 30-yard circle from five to four. These changed were then ratified in June by the ICC's chief executives committee.

Where can I find a good recording system for game consoles?

Hello once again, it's Thergox with another screen recording question. Lately I've been hunting down a proper screen recording system for game consoles -- because the ghetto look of a big TV screen at an angle isn't exactly appealing. I am not concerned about computer-central games (Computer referring directly to the Macintosh and PC) -- it is things like the Wii, Xbox, and the PS3 that I am looking to record. Things like Dazzle or EasyCap won't fit -- I am told they are not very good at what they are meant to do. Things more like AVERMEDIA, just a little more in a cheaper price range. Please tell me what you know.

Thank you, Thergox.

George Hincapie, Armstrong lieutenant and close ally, admits to doping

PARIS (Reuters) - George Hincapie, one of Lance Armstrong's former team mates and closest allies, has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.

The 39-year-old American, who rode alongside Armstrong in each of his seven Tour de France wins, released a statement on Wednesday confessing that he cheated.

"Because of my love for the sport, the contributions I feel I have made to it, and the amount the sport of cycling has given to me over the years, it is extremely difficult today to acknowledge that during a part of my career I used banned substances," he said.

"Early in my professional career, it became clear to me that, given the widespread use of performance enhancing drugs by cyclists at the top of the profession, it was not possible to compete at the highest level without them."

Hincapie, regarded as Armstrong's unofficial lieutenant during his record breaking feats in the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005, joined a list of former Armstrong teammates, including Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton, to admit to doping.

The three were among 11 riders identified on Wednesday as having provided evidence to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in its investigation into doping in cycling.

Armstrong has always denied using drugs but was banned for life in August after deciding not to fight the charges laid against him by USADA.

Hincapie said he stopped using drugs six years ago and decided to come clean about his own past in a bid to restore credibility to the sport.

"Two years ago, I was approached by US Federal investigators, and more recently by USADA, and asked to tell of my personal experience in these matters," he said.

"I would have been much more comfortable talking only about myself, but understood that I was obligated to tell the truth about everything I knew. So that is what I did.

"Cycling has made remarkable gains over the past several years and can serve as a good example for other sports," Hicapie said.

"Thankfully, the use of performance enhancing drugs is no longer embedded in the culture of our sport, and younger riders are not faced with the same choice we had."

A problem shared is a problem halved

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? The experience of being bullied is particularly detrimental to the psychological health of school girls who don't have social support from either adults or peers, according to a new study by Dr. Martin Guhn and colleagues from the University of British Columbia in Canada. In contrast, social support from adults or peers (or both) appears to lessen the negative consequences of bullying in this group, namely anxiety and depression.

The work is published online in Springer's Journal of Happiness Studies.

Guhn and his team looked at whether the combination of high levels of bullying and low levels of adult as well as peer support have a multiplicative negative effect on children's well-being.

A total of 3,026 ten-year-old school children from 72 schools in Vancouver, Canada, took part in the study and completed questionnaires, which assessed their satisfaction with life, their self-esteem, and their levels of anxiety and depression. The authors looked at whether the ratings for these factors differed, according to the quality of the children's relationships with both adults and their peers and how often they felt victimized.

Overall, girls were more likely to report positive relationships with both adults and peers, higher satisfaction with life, higher self-esteem as well as higher anxiety levels. There were no differences between boys' and girls' reported levels of bullying and depression. However, as many as 1 in 7 girls and 1 in 6 boys felt victimized several times a week, with verbal and social victimization more commonly reported than physical bullying; cyber bullying appeared to be relatively low.

The authors also found that positive relationships with adults and peers were strongly linked to life satisfaction and self-esteem, whereas bullying was strongly linked to depressive symptoms and anxiety. In addition, victimization was particularly strongly linked to low life satisfaction, low self-esteem and more depressive symptoms in girls who reported low levels of social support from adults as well as from peers.

The authors conclude: "Our findings have implications for promoting children's well-being in school and community contexts, supporting interventions that foster relationship-building skills and simultaneously reduce victimization. In other words, children need more than the absence of risk factors to experience good mental health and well-being."

Small Business Marketing ? What Used To Work

Today it seems like small business marketing is all about the shiney objects and social media. Just today I was telling a friend how often I hear people talk about ?what used to work? that they are not using anymore and she had a great comeback. SO many small businesses hear so often that you have to do the ?new? marketing that they have forgotten to use tried and true methods that worked for them in the past!

Life is divided into three terms - that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present to live better in the future. William WordsworthAt one of my favorite networking groups (The Dynamic Women a Denver womens networking group), we decided to attack this head on, all talk about what we used to do and find out if there are any missing pieces we can slot back into our marketing mix.

Here are the results of the small business marketing ?used to do and it worked, but I stopped doing it for some reason? survey:

Mailing

Karen ? Used to do Send Out Cards which she liked doing a lot. She said she just got out of the habit but that when she did send them she got a great response every time.

Robin ? Had a great mailing system to follow up with clients. She would send a thank you for the appointment follow up, then a ?it has been a while?, plus a birthday card with a 5% discount?worked great for generating repeat business?stopped for reasons unknown!

Networking

Evelyn and Dale ? They used to attend mixers, Chamber events and networking lunches, set up get togethers or one-on-ones and then sell to those people.

Donna ? Handed out flyers at networking and sold things. Go figure!

Amber ? Went to 16-20 networking groups per week when she was starting her business. She has stopped that now (she is a new mom!) but is still getting calls and leads from the couple of years that she did that.

Product Based

Rachel had a great one! Make sure you are a product of your product. If you sell fancy nails, make sure your nails look great. If you sell marketing like I do, make sure that you have embroidered shirts, promotional items, etc.

Sherrie ? agrees that you should buy your product BUT that you have to take the emotion out of it and not be bothered if your friends and family don?t buy from you.

In Person Marketing

Mickie (realtor) said she made her first sale to her next door neighbor and that it came about because she talked about her industry.

Jennifer (a realtor also) got her first client from walking around knocking on doors and offering a free market report.

Monica talked about doing shows in malls and making sure that you collect names, numbers and emails so you can followup.

Diane used to have a welcome meeting when she signed up a new Legal Shield customer. She invited the new member and her friends to do their wills together and got lots of leads from those (Diane is not doing that right now).

Email Marketing

Tara (me) ? I used to do email marketing but don?t like my database anymore so I have stopped really communicating with my peeps. Believe you me, I am going to change databases this month and start sending more info out!

Amber ? Even sending out informational emails about someone else?s events can get a response from people.

If you have a small business marketing plan that used to work and which you abandoned, please leave a comment below to let up know about it and make sure to try it again ASAP!

Stock index futures flat; Alcoa eyed

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures edged lower on Wednesday after Alcoa kicked off earnings season by warning of a slight slowdown in some markets, highlighting concerns about sluggish global growth, even as its quarterly results beat expectations.

* Stronger demand for aluminum products from airplane and automobile producers helped Alcoa Inc's third-quarter profit beat analysts expectations, but it scaled back its global aluminum consumption outlook for 2012, citing the slowdown in China. Alcoa shares lost 1.4 percent to $9 in light premarket trade.

* China's slowdown is expected to rein in corporate earnings in the third quarter and dent profit forecasts as the world's second-largest economy feels the effect of the debt crisis in the euro zone, a key trading partner of the Asian nation.

* Earlier in the week, the World Bank cut its growth forecast for East Asia on concerns China's slowdown could last longer than expected.

* Analysts forecast third-quarter earnings of Wall Street's S&P 500 <.spx> companies would fall 2.3 percent from the year-ago quarter, according to Thomson Reuters data, which would be the first drop in U.S. quarterly earnings in three years.

* According to data through Tuesday, 94 companies in the benchmark S&P index have issued negative outlooks, compared with 22 positive pre-announcements, for a ratio of 4.3, the weakest showing since the third quarter of 2001.

* Going against general declines was Yum Brands Inc , which gained 2.1 percent to $67.42 in premarket trading. The KFC parent company had raised its full-year outlook after sales in China held up, despite that nation's cooling economy.

* S&P 500 futures shed 0.5 point and were slightly below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 37 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 3.5 points.

* U.S. engine maker Cummins Inc lowered its 2012 forecast for a second time this year, citing delays in customer spending due to a weakening global economy, and said it would cut up to 1500 jobs.

* Chevron Corp , the second-largest U.S. oil company, warned that third-quarter profits would be "substantially lower" than in the previous quarter as a hurricane and maintenance curbed its oil and gas output and a fire hit its refining arm.

* Earnings from warehouse chain Costco Wholesale Corp were a bright spot; the company reported a 27 percent jump in fourth quarter profit, on higher sales and membership fees.

* Coming on the heels of a 2013 profit forecast that was cut last month, FedEx Corp said it plans to slash costs at its underperforming express air freight and services divisions, with profit improvements of $1.7 billion planned at those operations over the next four years.

* Economic data expected Wednesday include wholesale inventories for August at 10:00 a.m. (1400 GMT) and the Federal Reserve's Beige Book of economic conditions at 2:00 p.m. (1800 GMT).

* European shares were lower for a third straight session, hurt by expectations of weak corporate results that may weigh on equity markets into next month. <.eu/>

* Asian shares fell, with Japanese stocks sliding 2 percent to a two-month low, on concerns that the corporate results season will reveal weaker earnings in the face of flagging global economic growth.

I have been married for 17 yrs. at first my husband was very loving, respectful and would always go out of his way for me. I was married at 17 and even though at the time we were first married, he started to make comments about my clothes. Either my shirt was to revealing or shorts were to short, but at that time I was young and didn't listen to him. Through out the years our marriage really started to change and more so after the birth of our two boys. The last few years he has gotten really hard to live with, he would go off in screaming, ranting fits, cuseing at me, calling me names over simple things, for example one time was because he didn't have clean socks to wear to work. There was times he would leave for work and I would be in tears from all the hurtful things he would say to me, sometime through out the day or when he got home he would apologize for the screaming fit, more times than not he would just act like it never happened. The clothes I would wear went from simply suggesting that i wear something else because it was unappropriate, to forbidding me to wear certain clothes, then forbidding me to go certain places and the one that really ticked me off was when he tried to tell me not to be friends with someone. His reason for not wanting me to be friends with this person was because they had made mistakes in the past and he was worried what people would think of us if i was friends with them. He would go off the deep end over the simplest things, if he had told the boys they needed to cut the grass while he was at work and it wasn't done by the time he got home. He would start screaming and cuseing, saying he was tired of always asking them to do something and never getting any help from them, but when it came to them wanting stuff he was suppose to dish it out well not anymore. That is the nicest part of it and keep cuseing them, but for the most part his screaming fits were always directed towards me. About 10 months ago, I left after not being able to take the way he was towards me anymore and other personal reasons between him and I. It wasn't until a few months ago, I started to read about relationships and found out about controling spouses. Shortly after I left him, it was like driving him insane that he no longer had a say so in my life, when him and I have talked about what went wrong in our marriage, i have brought up all the hurt I went through when he would cuse at me and call me names, then he would tell me that I hurt him too. I asked him how exactly did I hurt him and he says how I left him.
When I left he told my 12 yr old that I didn't just leave him (my husband) but I also left him (my son) and his brother. I have made it a point to tell both of my boys that i would never ever leave them. I have tried many times to get them to move in with me, but I know it is his control over them that stops them from doing this. My oldest would spend the week ends with me and then it stopped, I couldnt figure out why for the longest time. Here recently I learned since I moved out my husband has laid all the house hold responsibilities on my 17 yr old and the responsibility of his little brother, anyways my husband asked my oldest why was he going up to my house every week end and he replied because I miss her and also up there I can just enjoy being me and my husband yelled back at him "If you enjoy living up there with your mommy and her new man so much then go ahead and pack your bags and move in with her and just leave me here alone with your brother the same way she did me. Needless to say he stopped spending the week ends with me. My Husband has been trying really hard to get me to come home, when we talk and he ask me to come back I willl try to explain to him that I am not willing to go through that kind of life again and then i hear about how he has changed, he dosent blow up like he use too. I have tried to explain that I think I am falling in love with someone else and he has told me that if i come home he can love me enough for both of us. I know that is not possible. Any time I talk to him and try to get him to understand certain things, he only hears out of the conversation what he wants to. I need help trying to figure out, is it possible for a overly controling person to truly change? Does he want me to come back home because he feels like I left him for someone new and it is driving his controling behavior insane? (that is not how it happened, but he feels it did) Maybe he isn't as controling as I think he is. Please someone tell me your opinion on this.

AIRING: This ad by the Obama campaign is airing in the closely contested states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

SCRIPT: Republican nominee Mitt Romney said in the first presidential debate that he's "not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. That's not my plan." This ad takes issue with that statement, citing a report from the Tax Policy Center. The narrator asks: "Why won't Romney level with us about his tax plan, which gives the wealthy huge new tax breaks?" The ad's answer is "because, according to experts, he'd have to raise taxes on the middle class or increase the deficit to pay for it."

KEY IMAGES: The ad starts with the clip from the Denver debate in which Romney disputes Obama's characterization of his tax plan. It cuts to an image of NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell citing the Tax Policy Center report. As the narrator questions Romney's assertion, it shows images of the GOP nominee talking during the debate as Obama looks down. The ad concludes by shifting from the debate to the Oval Office: "If we can't trust him here, how can we ever trust him here?" the narrator asks.

ANALYSIS: Romney's debate performance won high marks from across the political spectrum. In it, he forcefully rejected one of the president's major lines of attack ? that Romney's tax cuts largely benefit the wealthy and would end up increasing the tax burden for middle-income Americans.

To support his charge, Obama relies on a study from the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research group, that found Romney's proposed 20 percent across-the-board rate cut and repeal of the estate tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax would disproportionately benefit high-income households. The report concluded that it would be impossible for Romney to cut rates as he has promised without increasing the deficit ? which he vows not to do ? or raising taxes on middle-income households.

The report projected that the tax cuts would decrease revenue by about $480 billion in 2015, which the Obama campaign extrapolates to about $5 trillion over 10 years. Some conservative economists take issue with the Tax Policy Center's report, arguing that tax cuts allow people to make more income, which in turn creates more revenue for the government.

In effect, Romney is emphasizing the benefits of his tax plan without spelling out any of the trade-offs. Obama may not have gotten that point across as well as he wanted to on debate night, so he's taking a second crack at it in the ad.

(AP) ? In his suburban Houston neighborhood, at least, Alexander Fishenko kept a low profile, living well but never mingling with others on his block. All the while, U.S. authorities say, the immigrant from Kazakhstan was leading a plot to funnel cutting-edge military technology to Russia.

For the last four years, Fishenko lived with his family in a two-story, four-bedroom home, a stranger to his neighbors, unknown to leaders in Houston's Russian community of more than 100,000 residents.

"I wouldn't have thought he was the ring leader. He was so nondescript, an everyday kind of guy," Charlie Houssiere, who lives across the street from Fishenko, said Thursday. "The whole time I thought he worked at an oil company."

Instead, U.S. authorities say he was running a Houston-based company that obtained highly regulated technology and clandestinely exported it to Russia for use by that country's military and intelligence agencies. The microelectronics could have a wide range of military uses, including radar and surveillance systems, weapons guidance systems and detonation triggers, U.S. authorities say.

Fishenko is accused of scheming to purposely evade strict export controls for cutting-edge microelectronics, of operating inside the U.S. as an unregistered agent of the Russian government, and of money laundering.

Fishenko and six others arrested by authorities this week made their initial appearances Thursday in federal court in Houston. An eighth defendant appeared in court Wednesday.

Hearings to determine whether Fishenko and the other defendants will be granted bail are scheduled to start Friday. None of the defendants have entered pleas. Their cases are expected to be transferred to New York, where the indictment was filed.

Fishenko's attorney, Eric Reed, said he plans to review the charges against his client with a critical eye.

"I think these are fairly dramatic allegations that we will certainly take a hard look at to determine whether there is any evidence to back that up," Reed said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement noted the defendants are not charged with espionage.

According to court documents, Fishenko was born in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan and graduated from a technical institute in St. Petersburg before coming to America in 1994. In Houston, he initially worked at a Circuit City store. In his initial asylum application, Fishenko stated he had no prior military experience, but elsewhere he claimed to have served in a Soviet military intelligence unit in Berlin in the 1980s, according to court records.

Fishenko filed paperwork with the Texas Secretary of State to form a for-profit corporation with his Houston business ? Arc Electronics ? in 2001. His company proved to be successful, earning him about $50 million in gross revenue since 2002.

But authorities say those profits came illegally as Fishenko sent hundreds of shipments to Russia containing thousands of electronics, lying to U.S. manufacturers and suppliers about who would be using this technology.

While neighbors said they weren't sure what Fishenko did for a living, they knew he was successful.

Don McGlynn, who lives across the street from Fishenko, said the now jailed businessman seemed to remodel his home every year. Electricians, carpenters and other workers would stream in and out of the house, he said.

McGlynn said his neighbor had bought a new Mercedes SUV within the last year and that his wife, Viktoria, drove around in a red sports car.

"I didn't even know what he did for a living," McGlynn said. "When he was out in front (of his home) he would never say hello."

Houssiere said he would occasionally see Fishenko's wife at the gym but that the family mostly "kept to themselves."

"There was nothing suspicious about them," he said.

Sophia Grinblat, president of the local Russian Cultural Center, said she had never heard of Fishenko.

Grinblat, who is also editor of "Our Texas," a Russian language newspaper distributed in Houston and other Texas cities, said that Fishenko's company had placed a want ad on her paper's website about four months ago, looking for employees. According to the ad, Arc Electronics was looking for "energetic individuals for the position of contract administrator," who would play a critical role in sales and purchases.
